I started a journey of using more natural, non-toxic, green beauty products about a year ago now. I have tried a fair few different makeup, skincare and body products and have had a few failures but also a few wins that I want to share with you all!
Why Use Green Beauty Products?
What motivated me to switch to more natural products was a gradual realisation that the products I was using were actually full of so many different chemicals. I know that all ingredients technically are chemicals, but I am talking long long lists of things that I don’t think should really be on our skin – metals, silicones, acids etc. When I dug in to the research on some of these chemicals, I was pretty shocked. Some are associated with things like reproductive cancer in animal studies! I used the EWG Database to look up my old products and their ingredients. Now it is important not to get carried away here as just because there is one bad study out there, does not mean an ingredient is evil, but I was still a bit concerned! Here are a few reasons for switching that I came up with:
- Natural Ingredients
- Often better for the environment
- Often not tested on animals
- Often in more sustainable packaging
- Less chemicals!
As a nutritionist, I pay so much attention to what I put in to my body and what I recommend to my clients, that it only made sense to me to pay attention to what I put on my body. After all, products are absorbed through our skin and end up in our skin and sometimes bloodstream. So I made the decision to start looking for more natural alternatives to my favourite products.
5 Favourite Green Beauty Products
I have found some wonderful products over the last few months from some truly lovely brands. This is not my complete routine, rather my 5 favourites that I have found so far. There are a few products I have yet to find a good replacement for (hello natural deodorant) so this is definitely a work in progress!
This is the perfect simple face wash and I use it twice a day. It leaves my skin feeling clean and soft, but not stripped. I don’t use this to take my makeup off, I remove my makeup with micellar water first and then go in with this and wipe it off with a hot washcloth.
I also use this moisturiser twice a day and my skin has never looked better. Again, it is the perfect balance of moisturising but not greasy and it leaves my skin looking plump thanks to the hyaluronic acid. I used to use two different moisturisers for morning and night, but there really is no need so switching to one universal moisturiser has really simplified my routine.
I used to wear such heavy makeup when I had bad skin because all I wanted to do was cover it up but I hated that heavy, sticky feeling of full coverage foundations. Now that my skin is calmer, I love just wearing a lightweight foundation. This foundation is very liquidy and lightweight but it balances out my skin perfectly while letting things like my freckles shine through. It has a lovely soft and silky finish and lasts all day.
I was skeptical when I read about the arnica in this concealer and thought it might be a gimmick, but I honestly do notice the difference. Arnica has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for bruising and inflammation so it makes sense to include it in a product to cover up things like spots. Not only does it cover both spots and undereye circles beautifully, I also seriously notice that it reduces the redness and swelling in my spots when I take it off at the end of the day!
I am SO picky when it comes to mascaras, I have a terrible habit of picking at my eyelashes that is really amplified by irritating mascaras! In the past, some mascaras have even made my eyelashes hurt which is just so odd. This one has a lovely fluffy brush and lengthens and adds volume to my lashes without adding clumps. Plus it is easy to remove at the end of the day!
